Writing is P.J. Farris’ passion—sports are an obsession!!! Breakfast is a bowl of cereal, juice, and ESPN—not necessarily in that order. Whatever the season, P.J. keeps up with the latest sports news following favorite teams and players with a fervor. The sports page is read first and SI before Newsweek. P.J. divides time between Illinois and Arizona.
Growing up on a farm in rural Indiana, P.J. recalls playing sports until it got too dark to see the ball. Basketball was the most popular sport as everyone played outdoors in freezing weather until their fingers were numb with cold. No one stopped playing until someone scored 21. If you got hurt, you took a deep breath, bit your lip—and played on.
P.J.’s family members are all sports fanatics. Son Kurtis played nearly every sport from T-ball on—soccer, basketball, tennis, and track. Today he still enjoys playing basketball, tennis, and Tae Kwon Do. Stepson Ron played football. Even the dog, Ginger, is a top-notch tennis ball catcher.
